txt speak - luv it or h8 it?

There's been a lot of media interest in the language of text messaging recently, not least because of the latest book to be published by David Crystal, one of the UK's leading linguists. In Txting: the gr8 db8 Crystal explores the impact that the language of texting has had on the spelling system of English. This article features a detailed account of some of Crystal's thoughts on the subject. Whether you're an AS student thinking about the language of so-called 'blended', mixed mode electronic texts, or an A2 student focusing on language change and attitudes towards it, this article is a very useful one to read.

Slightly immature comment:
Those who feel that text language is a bad thing and is ruining the English language should be prepared to foot the bill of all the texts it will use to get across something that, when using text language, could have been writen in one text.
Simple idea I think, would stop all the problems!

Unless of course the need for text language comes from a lack of time in which to write the message, not a lack of money, a text written as "hlp wich wire shld i cut? only gt 2 2nds on tima" or something along those lines, would probably be appropriate.

I can't stand text language. I refuse to use it, except occasionally on MSN when I can't be bothered to type "I have to go now, good bye".

I don't mind it too much when people use it with their mobiles, but on MSN it is unforgivable. I feel like saying to people "Slow down, you don't have to rush!"

On MSN it is just wrong, it's free and you have enough space to write a small essay! I do not use text language either (i have unlimited free texts to my friends) but it does start to scare me when my dad starts to use text language 'Did u frgt yr keys?' AND my mum '2l8 2 get home b4 u went out' Absolutely cringe worthy! I think that language should be expanded not condensed, tbh :P I think that it's more the mixing of numbers and letters that i mind more than just abbreviations, but mispelling to make words shorter drives me crazy (2nite etc) Text whatever you like to me, but if there is a number/word mix, i won't be replying!

(By the way, interesting word used in the 'word verification' bit 'mifyings' should definitely have a proper meaning!)
